In general, what are cookies?
A “cookie” is a small text file, containing a certain amount of information, stored on the browser / device used by a user to display a web page or to use a web service. This information is extracted by the web server each time the browser / device requests the content. With this information retrieved, the web server can “recognize” that the user has visited this page before and chose a few preferences (such as language selection, units of measure, cookie acceptance policy, etc.). In this way, the web server can provide more relevant and personalized content to the user.
Another way in which cookies are used by web servers is to follow the user’s navigation paths during his / her visits to the site. This data can be used to profile browsing habits in order to send personalized announcements, statistically analyze website visits and / or provide more suitable online services.
Many websites may also use “third party cookies”. These are generally managed by other websites / web services, the content of which may come from external servers, even if the content itself is displayed on the initial website. Each of them can use their own cookies for the same purposes described above.
Certain cookies are necessary for efficient navigation and are automatically assigned to the visitor; most of them are destroyed after leaving the website (“session”). Other cookies (“persistent”) could be kept saved on the browser / device for a longer time, depending on the use for which they were designed (eg to keep track of the language preferences of the user when he / she visits the website in the future).
